Billy Budd

Opera by Benjamin Britten (libretto by E M Forster and Eric Crozier, on Herman Melville's story), first produced at Covent Garden, London, England, on 1 December 1951. It was revised in 1960 and broadcast on BBC radio on 13 November that year; the new version was first produced at Covent Garden on 9 January 1964. The story tells how Billy Budd, accused of mutiny, kills the master-at-arms Claggart and is hanged by Captain Vere.
