Bingen

City in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the River Rhine, 32 km/20 mi west of Mainz; population (1994) 23,900. Bingen is a centre for tourism and has a long history of wine trading.

Overlooking the city is the outcrop known as the Rochusberg, on which there is a chapel containing sculptures and paintings. On a rock in the middle of the Rhine stands the Mauseturm (Mouse Tower), scene of the legend of Archbishop Hatto II, recounted in a ballad by the English Romantic poet Robert Southey. Nearby on the river is a whirlpool known as the Bingerloch, which was a hazard to navigation until the channel was widened in 1834.

The abbess and musician Hildegard of Bingen founded a monastery on the Rupertsberg, near Bingen, around 1147.
