Binghamton

City and administrative headquarters of Broome County, south-central New York State, USA; population (2000) 47,400. It is situated at the confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers, near the Pennsylvania border. Industries manufacture shoes, textiles, aviation training equipment, machinery, photo supplies, and computers. Agriculture, primarily the raising of poultry, livestock, and dairy cattle, and the production of poultry and dairy products, lumber, and pulpwood, is important in the surrounding region. With Johnson City and Endicott, directly to the west on the Susquehanna River, Binghamton forms the manufacturing region known as the Triple Cities.

Binghamton was first settled in 1787 on the site of an Iroquois village, and laid out in 1800; it was incorporated as a city in 1867. Binghamton was the site of the first US farm bureau, in 1911.
