BioSphere 2Ecological test project, a ‘planet in a bottle’, in Arizona, USA. Under a sealed glass and metal dome, different habitats are recreated, with representatives of nearly 4,000 species, to test the effects that various environmental factors have on ecosystems. Simulated ecosystems, or ‘mesocosms’, include savannah, desert, rainforest, marsh, and Caribbean reef. The response of such systems to elevated atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide gas (CO2 ) are among the priorities of Biosphere 2 researchers.

Learning About the Planet At the Reborn Biosphere 2 Originally conceived as a sealed laboratory for would-be explorers of Mars, Biosphere 2 fell into scientific disrepute when its eight original residents suffered from a lack of oxygen in their artificial atmosphere (see sidebar). Biosphere 2, the costly experiment in creating a closed, self-sustaining ecosystem in Arizona, failed because the concrete walls ate up oxygen and left humans inside with barely enough to breathe. |
