Bioko

A volcanic island in Equatorial Guinea, located in the Bight of Biafra about 40 km/25 mi south of the coast of Cameroon; area 2,017 sq km/780 sq mi; population (1995 est) 82,700. The land rises to 3007 m/9865 ft at Pico de Basilé. The main town, Malabo, is also the capital of the country. Bioko's main products are copra, cocoa, coffee, and bananas.

The island is situated between 3 degrees and 4 degrees N latitude. It was previously named Fernando Póo after a Portuguese navigator who visited it in 1471. At various stages since then, it has been a colony of Britain, Portugal, and Spain.
