science park

An aerial view of southeast Oxford, England. In the foreground is the Oxford Science Park, a high-tech industrial estate, focusing on biotechnology and computer hardware and software. Key to its success are the good transport network (notice the roads), the availability of land (this is a green-field site on the edge of town), and the association with Oxford University. In the background, the 1950s housing development of Rose Hill is clear, with the houses laid out in a geometric pattern.

Type of trading estate where the results of academic research are developed for the commercial market, especially in the areas of science and technology. They are usually located close to a university on an edge-of-town greenfield site where there is plenty of space for parking and further expansion, and close to a good transport network. The activities on a science park foster a collaboration between academic and industrial interests.
