BioSphere 2Ecological test project, a ‘planet in a bottle’, in Arizona, USA. Under a sealed glass and metal dome, different habitats are recreated, with representatives of nearly 4,000 species, to test the effects that various environmental factors have on ecosystems. Simulated ecosystems, or ‘mesocosms’, include savannah, desert, rainforest, marsh, and Caribbean reef. The response of such systems to elevated atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide gas (CO2 ) are among the priorities of Biosphere 2 researchers.

In a similar experiment in Arizona's Biosphere II near Tucson, doubling the air's carbon dioxide concentration decreased coral growth by 40 percent. Biosphere II (University of Arizona 1999) proved that one particular approach to creating a bubble environment of human and ecosystem interaction in microcosm did not work. While Pearse notes that the Fallbrook food court has been a financial success for the mall's owners, he is quick to concede that his subsequent distraction with the Biosphere II mega-project helped create some hardships for Pearse Systems. |
