bird-eating spider

Large hairy spider of the genus Mygale found in many hot countries. When stretched out it spans 15-22 cm/5.9-8.7 in across, although the body is only about 5 cm/2 in. It spins its web in trees, or in hollows under rocks. It goes out at night to hunt for its food of insects, and to ensnare young birds.
