Birendra, Bir Bikram Shah Dev (1945–2001)

King of Nepal from 1972, when he succeeded his father Mahendra; he was formally crowned in 1975. King Birendra oversaw Nepal's return to multiparty politics and introduced a new constitution in 1990. He was murdered by Crown Prince Dipendra, along with eight other members of the royal family, in June 2001. His brother Gyanendra replaced him as king.
