Birkett, (William) Norman (1883-1962)

English lawyer and politician. He was a Liberal member of Parliament 1923-24 and 1929-31. He was a judge of the King's Bench Division 1941-50, and in 1945 was appointed a deputy member of the International War Criminal Court. He became a privy councillor in 1947.

Birkett was born at Ulverston, Lancashire, and educated at Cambridge. He became a barrister in 1913 and a King's Counsel in 1924. During World War I he was chairman of the Advisory Committee for Defence Regulation 18b. He was created a baron in 1958.
