Birkhoff, Garrett (1911–1996)

US mathematician. Birkhoff taught at Harvard until 1981. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a consultant to General Motors, the Rand Corporation, and Los Alamos Science Lab. His specialities included modern algebra, fluid mechanics, numerical methods, reactor theory, differential equations, and history of mathematics.
