Bisbee

City and administrative headquarters of Cochise County in southeastern Arizona, 130 km/80 mi southeast of Tucson; population (2000) 6,100. In the 1880s, at its peak, it was the largest copper mining town in the world. The closure of the Lavender Pit mine in 1974 ended copper mining here, but some processing is still done.

Visitors are drawn to mining-related sites and to arts events and crafts shops. There are holiday ranches as well as gold, silver, and lead mines in the vicinity.

History

Bisbee was at the heart of what was formerly one of the richest copper regions in the USA. In 1917, 1,000 miners who went on strike at the Copper Queen Mine were herded into boxcars at gunpoint and shipped out of the state.
