Bishop's Waltham

Ancient town in Hampshire, England; population (2001) 6,550. It lies 16 km/10 mi southeast of Winchester.

The town was originally in the see of Winchester, but it is now in the Portsmouth diocese. The Bishop's Palace, built by Bishop Henry de Blois (brother of Stephen of Blois, king of England) around 1135, was completely destroyed during the Civil War in 1644. The ruins are open to the public. The church of St Peter has a 15th-century chancel.
