Biysk

City in the Altai krai (territory) of the Russian Federation, in southern Siberia; population (1996 est) 227,000. It lies on the Biya River 150 km/92 mi southeast of Barnaul. The Altai railway line terminates at Biysk, and a highway runs from here over the Altai Mountains to Mongolia. The city has engineering, food, and textile industries, and a museum with rich collections on ethnography and the history of the Altai Mountains area. It was founded in 1709 as a Russian fortress.
