Biskupin

Prehistoric timber fort dating from the 6th–5th centuries BC, near Znin, central Poland. Wooden features have been preserved by its waterlogged lakeside setting. The fort had a timber rampart, and between 80 and 100 houses laid out along streets of wooden beams. The site belonged to the Lausitz culture, and had a resident population estimated at 400 to 500 people.

Biskupin was excavated 1938–49, and attests to a well-developed system of communal fortification in central Europe, especially in Great Poland and Silesia.
