agarJellylike carbohydrate, obtained from seaweeds. It is used mainly in microbiological experiments as a culture medium for growing bacteria and other micro-organisms. The agar is resistant to breakdown by micro-organisms, remaining a solid jelly throughout the course of the experiment.
