Bitar, Salah Eddin (1912-1980)

Syrian politician, prime minister several times between 1963 and 1964 and in 1966. He was, with Michel Aflaq, a cofounder of the pan-Arab socialist doctrine of Ba'athism, which was particularly influential in Syria and Iraq. When the Ba'ath Party split into several factions in 1966 he left Syria for exile in Beirut, Lebanon.
