Bitat, Rabah

    0.07 sec.

Bitat, Rabah (1926- )

Algerian nationalist and politician. A founding member of the Comité Révolutionnaire d'Unité et d'Action (CRUA) and the Front de Libération Nationale (FLN), he was arrested in 1955 by the colonial authorities and detained in France until 1962.

The struggle for power at independence and his marginalization, by being given the honorific post of third vice-president, led to his disapproval of Mohamed Ben Bella's regime and exile to France in 1963. After returning to Algeria in 1965, he was appointed minister of transport 1966-77 and became president of the national assembly 1977-90.
