Bitola

City in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, 32 km/20 mi north of the Greek border; population (2002) 77,700. Agricultural produce, tobacco, and wool are traded, and textiles and filigree work manufactured.

Held by the Turks from 1382, it was taken by the Serbs in 1912 during the First Balkan War. Retaken by Bulgaria in 1915, it was again taken by the Allies in November 1916. It is the second-largest town in Macedonia.
