Beiderbecke, Bix (1903–1931)US jazz cornetist, composer, and pianist. A romantic soloist with the bands of King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and Paul Whiteman, Beiderbecke was the first accepted white jazz innovator. He was influenced by the classical composers Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Igor Stravinsky. His recordings include ‘I'm Coming, Virginia’ (1927) and ‘Singin' the Blues’ (1927). His reputation grew after his early death with the publication of Dorothy Baker's novel Young Man with a Horn (1938), based on his life. How to thank TFD for its existence? Gere plays Dixie Dwyer, a musician based on the 1920s jazz cornet-player Bix Beiderbecke, who gets mixed up with the mob and falls in love with a mobster's teenage girlfriend, Vera, played by Diane Lane. 1931: Bix Beiderbecke, legendary jazz trumpeter, died aged 28 from a combination of pneumonia and alcoholism. Davenport boasts of several popular music festivals such as The Mississippi Valley Fair, The Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival (dedicated to Bix Beiderbecke) and The Mississippi Valley Blues Festival. |
