Björling, Sigurd (1907–1983)

Swedish baritone. He studied with John Forsell at the Stockholm Conservatory, and made his debut there in 1934. His US debut was in San Francisco in 1950, as Kurwenal, and in 1952 he sang Telramund at the New York Metropolitan Opera House. He appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1951 as Amfortas, and at Bayreuth in 1952 as Wotan; he sang this role until 1973 in Stockholm. His other roles included Balstrode and Hindemith's Mathis.
