Bjerknes, Jacob (Aall Bonnevie) (1897-1975)

Swedish-born meteorologist. Bjerknes worked with his father, the famous Norwegian meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes, to establish weather observation stations and the famous Bergen Institute in Norway. Bjerknes influenced weather forecasting in the USA considerably, and was able to describe cyclones and the development and dissipation of warm and cold fronts. In the 1950s he described the ‘Niño’ effect from the Pacific Ocean . Bjerknes became a naturalized American citizen in 1946.
