Blücher, Gebhard Leberecht von (1742-1819)

Prussian general and field marshal, popularly known as ‘Marshal Forward’. He took an active part in the patriotic movement, and in the War of German Liberation defeated the French as commander-in-chief at Leipzig in 1813, crossed the Rhine to Paris in 1814, and was made prince of Wahlstadt (Silesia).

In 1815 he was defeated by Napoleon at Ligny but came to the aid of British commander Wellington at Waterloo.
