Black Beauty

Novel by Anna Sewell, published in 1877. It describes the experiences of the horse, Black Beauty, under many different owners, and revived the genre of ‘animal autobiography’ popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Although now considered to be a children's book, it was written to encourage sympathetic treatment of horses by adults.
