Black Hawk (or Black Sparrow Hawk) (1767-1838)

American Indian leader of the Sac people. A principal opponent of the cession of lands to the US government, he sided with the British during the War of 1812 and joined his people in their removal to Iowa in 1831. In 1832 he led a large contingent back to Illinois to resettle the Sac homeland. Defeated by Illinois militia in the bloody ‘Black Hawk War’, he was captured and permanently exiled to Iowa.

Black Hawk was born on the Rock River near present-day Rock Island, Illinois. During the War of 1812 he served under the Shawnee leader Tecumseh in the Tennessee River valley.
