magpie

Any of various birds belonging to the crow family. They feed on insects, snails, young birds, and carrion, and are found in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and western North America. (Genus Pica, family Corvidae, order Passeriformes.)

The black-billed magpie (P. pica) of Europe, Asia, and western North America, about 45 cm/18 in long, has black and white plumage, the long tail having a metallic sheen.

Swabs were taken from the oropharynx, cloaca, or both of 109 American Crows, 31 Blue Jays, 6 Common Ravens, and 4 Black-billed Magpies from Manitoba, and 255 American Crows and 28 Blue Jays from Ontario.
It passed by direct bird-to-bird contact in four species--blue jay, American crow, black-billed magpie, and ring-billed gull--Komar says.
