Blackrock

Holiday resort in County Louth, Republic of Ireland, situated on Dundalk Bay. There are a number of 16th-century ruined abbeys, castles, and tower houses in the surrounding area, including Heynestown Castle, Dunmahon Castle, and Rossmakea Abbey (about 5 km/3 mi to the west); well-preserved castles, some still inhabited, include Miltown Castle and Darver Castle (7 km/4 mi northwest) and Killincoole Castle (9 km/5 mi northwest).

Blackrock

Suburb of the city of Cork, County Cork, Republic of Ireland. It is situated on the south side of the Lee estuary, 5 km/3 mi to the east of Cork. On the promontory is Dundanion Castle in Blackrock Road, from where William Penn set out for America in 1699.

Dundanion Castle was built in 1604 by Charles Blount, Lord Deputy Mountjoy. It was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in 1829. It is now a restaurant. Blackrock is the location of the Cork Heritage Centre, and also of the Cork Showgrounds, where agricultural shows and jumping competitions are held annually. Blackrock is also the home of Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork's Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) stadium.

Blackrock

Seaside suburb of Dublin, County Dublin, Republic of Ireland. It is situated 3 km/2 mi north of Dun Laoghaire. Blackrock has service and computer-software industries.

Blackrock, named after the black limestone rock once found on the coast, was a popular seaside resort for the aristocracy in the 18th century. Blackrock House (1774) was the home of Charles Kickham, chair of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), and later the home of Irish president Éamon de Valera.

Features include Blackrock Cross, a 10th-century carved stone cross. Blackrock Park was developed in the 1860s, and incorporates part of the 18th-century Vauxhall gardens. The town hall was built in 1865, and extended in 1880. A college of education; Blackrock College, a school; and Blackrock Clinic, a private hospital, are all located here.
