Blackmore, R(ichard) D(oddridge) (1825–1900)

English novelist. His romance Lorna Doone (1869), set on Exmoor, southwest England, in the late 17th century, won him lasting popularity.

He published 13 other novels, including Cradock Nowell (1866), The Maid of Sker (1872), Alice Lorraine (1875), and Springhaven (1887).

Blackmore was born in Longworth, Berkshire (now Oxfordshire), and studied at Oxford University, then became a barrister. When his health broke down, he turned to literary work and market gardening in Teddington, Middlesex.

He published several unsuccessful volumes of poetry before turning to fiction. His first novel was the successful Clara Vaughan (1864), and his other novels include Cripps the Carrier (1876), Christowell (1882), Perlycross (1894), Tales from the Telling House (1896), and Dariel (1897).
