Blacksburg

Town in southwestern Virginia, 45 km/28 mi southwest of Roanoke, in the Appalachian Mountains; population (1990) 34,600. It is the seat of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1872).

Smithfield Plantation, a 49,000-ha/120,000-acre 1740s land grant, was centered just southwest of the town.
