Blackwell, Emily (1826–1910)

English-born physician. Blackwell emigrated to the USA with her family in 1932. Her older sister was Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in modern times to be awarded a medical degree. Emily followed her older sister into medicine, and was best known for assisting Elizabeth with the development of the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. Noted for her pragmatism and administrative skills, Emily is also credited with transforming a clinic into working hospital.
