Bladensburg

Town in south-central Maryland, 11 km/7 mi northeast of Washington DC, on the Anacostia River; population (1990) 8,100. Formerly a busy port, shipping tobacco and flour until 1800, it is now a largely residential suburb.

History

On 24 August 1814, in the War of 1812, US forces were routed here by British forces, who then burned most of Washington's public buildings. In 1820, on Bladensburg's outskirts, James Barron killed the US naval hero Stephen Decatur in a duel.
