Blaenau Ffestiniog

Town in Gwynedd, northwest Wales, 15 km/9 mi northeast of Porthmadog; population with Ffestiniog (1991) 4,500. The slate quarries are no longer operating but are open to tourists. A pumped storage scheme is also open to visitors. The Ffestiniog Railway, the oldest independent railway company in the world, runs steam trains on a narrow-gauge track from Blaenau to Porthmadog.
