Blaine, James Gillespie (1830-1893)

US politician and diplomat. Elected to the House of Representatives 1862, he served as Speaker 1869-75 and senator 1876-81. Unable to secure the Republican presidential nomination in 1876 or 1880, he served briefly as President Garfield's secretary of state. Gaining the Republican presidential nomination 1884, he was defeated by Grover Cleveland. During the Harrison administration 1889-93, Blaine was again secretary of state.

Blaine was born in West Brownsville, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Washington College 1847. He moved to Maine 1854 and served in the state legislature 1858-62.

Blaine strongly opposed the issue of paper money during the Civil War, and the immigration of Chinese. As secretary of state he was in favour of reciprocity treaties with other nations, organized the first Pan-American Congress, and adopted a firm position in seal-fisheries controversies with Great Britain. He wrote Twenty Years of Congress (2 volumes) 1884-86 and Political Discussions 1887.
