Bloch, Marcus Eliezer (c. 1723–1799)

German ichthyologist (specialist in fish) His Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische/General Natural History of Fish (1782–95), is the earliest standard work of ichthyology. Although he followed the arrangement of the Swedish naturalist Linnaeus, he established 19 new genera and 176 new species.
