Block, Maurice (1816-1901)

German-born French statistician. He became a naturalized French citizen after the completion of his studies at Bonn and Giessen in Germany. In 1852 he was appointed to the statistical office of the French government, and after 1862 he devoted himself to the compilation of statistics.

Among his works are Dictionnaire de l'administration française/Dictionary of French Administration (1856), Statistique de la France/Statistics on France (1860), Dictionnaire générale de la politique/General Political Dictionary (1862), L'Europe politique et sociale/Political and Social Europe (1869), and Annuaire de l'économie politique et de la statistique/Annual of Political Economy and Statistics (edited by Block from 1856).

In 1880 he was elected a member of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques.
