Block Island

Island in the Atlantic Ocean belonging to the state of Rhode Island, at the eastern entrance to Long Island Sound; area 28 sq km/11 sq mi; population (1990) 800. Block Island Sound lies to the west. The economy depends principally on tourism; fishing is also important.

It was explored by the Dutch navigator Adriaen Block in 1614 and was settled in 1661. It boasts two good harbours, two lighthouses, over 300 ponds, and the chalk cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs on gently rolling terrain.
