Blockx, Jan (1851–1912)| Belgian composer. Most of his operas and all his cantatas for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra are set to Flemish words. |
| He learned music as a choirboy and went to the Antwerp School of Music, later to the Leipzig Conservatory. In 1886 he became professor and in 1901 director of the Antwerp Conservatory, succeeding Peter Benoît, whom he followed as a Flemish music nationalist. |
