Bloomfield

Town in north-central Connecticut, adjacent to Hartford; population (1990) 19,500. Once a tobacco-growing town, it is now primarily a residential suburb with some industrial parks and a large insurance sector.

Bloomfield

Township in northeastern New Jersey, 3 km/2 mi north of Newark; population (1990) 45,100. It is a suburb of New York City and Newark. It produces pharmaceuticals, porcelain, and electrical appliances, and contains many office buildings. Bloomfield College (1868) is here.

History

Settled in the 17th century and serving as a supply centre during the American Revolution (1775-83), it was originally part of Newark. Named after a Revolutionary general, it became a separate township in 1812, and was a commercial hub throughout the 19th century.
