Bloomfield| Township in northeastern New Jersey, 3 km/2 mi north of Newark; population (1990) 45,100. It is a suburb of New York City and Newark. It produces pharmaceuticals, porcelain, and electrical appliances, and contains many office buildings. Bloomfield College (1868) is here. |
History Settled in the 17th century and serving as a supply centre during the American Revolution (1775–83), it was originally part of Newark. Named after a Revolutionary general, it became a separate township in 1812, and was a commercial hub throughout the 19th century. |
