Bloomfield Hills

Residential suburb of Detroit in southeastern Michigan, 8 km/5 mi southeast of Pontiac; population (1990) 4,300. It is in Bloomfield township (population (1990) 42,500). There are a number of businesses, notably advertising agencies.Cranbrook Educational Community includes private schools, an art academy and museum, and a science institute.

Bloomfield Hills was settled in 1819. It was primarily agricultural until about 1900, when affluent Detroit residents began to build estates. The original mansion and gardens of the Cranbrook estate are open to the public.
