Bloomsburg

Town and administrative headquarters of Columbia County in eastern Pennsylvania, 56 km/35 mi southwest of Wilkes-Barre, on the Susquehanna River; population (1990) 12,400. Modern industries produce such goods as clothing and electronic equipment. Bloomsburg University (1839) is here.

History

Bloomsburg was settled in 1772 and laid out in 1802. In the 1870s, it was the site of murder trials growing out of violence in nearby coal mines by the Molly Maguires, an Irish miners' association.
