Blue Island

City in northeastern Illinois, on the Calumet Sag Channel, a residential and industrial suburb of Chicago, 24 km/15 mi southwest of the Loop (the central business district of Chicago); population (1990) 21,200. The local economy is largely based on train yards and repair workshops. Manufacturing includes iron and steel products, wire, tile, brick, lumber, and barrels.

It was settled in 1835 and has long served as an important rail terminal.
