blue shift

In astronomy, manifestation of the Doppler effect in which light from an object appears to be of shorter wavelength (and therefore of higher frequency) when the object and observer are approaching each other (blue light is of a higher frequency than other colours in the visible spectrum). The blue shift is the opposite of the red shift.
