Bluetooth

Short-range radio communications system designed to connect personal computers, printers, mobile phones, cameras, and similar devices, thus avoiding the need for cables. Bluetooth was announced in 1998 and was developed by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba. It operates in the licence-free 2.45GHz band and is intended to be more convenient than IrDA infrared connections as WIDs (wireless information devices) do not need to be kept within line-of-sight to operate.

Bluetooth chips became available in 2000 and are used in various devices including mobile phones, camcorders, laptops, and printers.
