Blytheville

City and joint administrative headquarters (with Osceola) of Mississippi County in northeastern Arkansas, 10 km/6 mi south of the Missouri border and 13 km/8 mi west of the Mississippi River; population (2000) 18,300. It is a distribution centre for wheat, hay, livestock, and corn, and manufactures farm equipment and ambulances.

The Blytheville (Eaker) Air Force Base was included within the city's limits in 1962. Mississippi County Community College (1974) is here. The Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge is to the west.

Blytheville was laid out in 1880 and had a lumber-based economy until drainage of the alluvial soil led to widespread cotton production.
