Boëllmann, Léon (1862–1897)

French organist and composer. His Gothic Suite (1895) is well known.

He was born in Alsace and trained as an organist under Eugène Gigout, a teacher of church music in Paris. He was appointed organist of the church of St Vincent de Paul.

Orchestral

symphony in F major; Fantasie dialoguée for organ and orchestra, Variations symphoniques for cello and orchestra (1893).

Chamber

piano quartet, piano trio; cello and piano sonata.

Church music and organ

church music; organ works include two suites (first Gothique, 1895).
