Bo'ness

Town and former burgh in Falkirk unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the Firth of Forth, 33 km/21 mi west of Edinburgh; population (2001) 14,000. It has a shipbreaking yard, iron foundries, and timber works. Part of the Antonine Wall, a Roman fortification, traverses the area and incorporates the outhouse in which James Watt developed the steam engine.

The Bo'ness and Kinneil railway, recreated by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, provides a 6 km/4 mi link to Birkhill. Bo'ness station contains the Scottish Railway Exhibition, which tells the history of Scotland's railways. Nearby Kinneil Estate, was the site of both a Roman fort and a medieval village. It is now a public park, and there is an interpretive centre and a museum located in the 17th-century stable blocks.
