Boaco

Department of Nicaragua, lying in the central highlands; area 4,982 sq km/1,924 sq mi; population (1995 est) 124,500. The capital, a commercial and manufacturing centre, is also called Boaco; population (1995 est) 19,500. The population of the department is clustered in the valleys where cattle and pig rearing, dairy farming, and the cultivation of rice and maize are important. Industries include the manufacture of timber products, soap, bricks, and Panama hats.
