Boca Raton

City in Palm Beach County, southeast Florida, on the Atlantic Ocean, 25 km/16mi north of Fort Lauderdale; population (1992) 64,300. Although it is mainly a resort and residential area, it also has some electronic industries. Venture capital and other financial and commercial operations also established themselves in the city in large numbers in the 1970s and 1980s. Boca Raton was laid out in 1914 and incorporated as a city in 1957. It is the home of Florida Atlantic University (1961), the College of Boca Raton (1962), and an Air Force radar training centre.
