Bocskai, Stephen (István) (1557–1606)

Prince of Transylvania. He was the leader of a successful rebellion against the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II in 1604, and in 1605 was elected Prince of Transylvania by the Diet (legislative assembly). In June 1606 peace was concluded with the Archduke Matthias, granting freedom of religious worship to the Protestants of Hungary and Transylvania.
